A few days ago I got shot (at point blank range) in an armed robbery.
I will tell the story here once so that I don’t have to explain it 1 million times over and over again. Ha ha ha.
Last Tuesday I was going to go pick up some friends and my car battery was dead. So I decided to jump in a taxi to go get them – this was in Paitilla, in Panama.
I finally flagged a taxi, and I saw some guys in the back, and asked where were the guys going. And the driver said:
“Don’t worry. I’ll just drop you off first”.
That was my biggest mistake in this whole situation.
So I sat in the front, and immediately the guy sitting behind me grabbed my shirt and tried to pin me to the seat.
Now, I’ve trained in self-defense and fighting in hand-to-hand combat for many years with Christophe Clugston. So I immediately reacted. I didn’t even have time to think about whether or not I should be reacting — I just reacted.
I probably scared the guy sitting behind the driver seat, so he shot me immediately. Only by the grace of God that I had my hands in the right place – which was on the side of my neck to grab the other assailant’s hands.
The bullet cut my left hand as it grazed the side, and then entered my right-hand and stopped in the wrist. Frankly, I didn’t know I was shot. At that point, I wasn’t feeling any pain. (On a side note, the doctor said that the muscle mass in my hands probably saved my life. God bless weightlifting.)
But I smelled the gunpowder, so I knew a bullet had gone off. So I just calmed down. I gave them my iPhone and my wallet, and asked if I could keep my IDs! Ha ha ha.
“Give me the wallet or I’ll shoot you again”.
I handed him the wallet, and I asked them to drop me off. (Another miracle is they just let me get out of the car without shooting me again).
At this point I saw I was bleeding from both hands. I wasn’t sure exactly where I was shot, because it was dark. But I was only a block from my penthouse. So I ran home, which was probably mistake because the blood really started pumping.
And when I got home, my wife called the ambulance and I canceled my credit cards, and canceled my date with my friend Glen Ledwell. I called him and said,
“Dude, I can’t see you tonight. Have just been shot. I’ve got to go to the hospital.”
To say he was shocked would be an understatement, ha ha.
Frankly, I am just filled with gratitude that I’m still alive and I can move. I went to the hospital and they took good care of me. I was out three days later.
The biggest price of this whole experience is my right-hand, which will be in a cast for 6 to 8 weeks. It will be hard for me to type, hard for me to train in the gym. But I love a great challenge, and it’ll be a good opportunity to get creative and have fun.
Thanks everyone for all the love, the humor and the support that you’ve given me. I want to thank all those who came and saw me in the hospital. Your love really helped me heal from the inside out. God bless you all. I love you all, and I’m glad to be here on this earth to continue the journey. Be careful, but don’t get jaded.

There’s hundreds of little tactical things you can
do to increase your existing profits.

We are seeing tremendous return on investment
from these ads.
The key is to create an image that has an incredible
clickthrough rate (CTR).
A good CTR is 5% (for friends of friends).
3% is decent.
Below that you probably missed the mark.
Key note to maximizing profitability:
Don’t expand TOO FAR.
If you have around 10,000 fans – spend around $200.
Then you’ll hit all the friends of your fans and that’s how
you get a really good CTR (and cheap clicks).
If you go too far, you’ll end up with friends of friends of friends.
And your CTR will drop.
Again: remember that the IMAGE is the key.
And the most important thing always is to have a great: sales funnel.
Promoted post aren’t going to magically fix a broken marketing machine.

What kind of odds would you have of winning or even surviving?
Let me tell you, I wouldn’t want to do that…
Entering a hyper-competitive market like
weight loss might be enticing because of the size of it,
but excitement soon leads to depression when you can’t make a penny of profit.
After you read this article, you’ll understand why big markets like
“weight loss” need very special marketing strategies in order to succeed.
So, going in there with a level 2 or level 3 marketing plan isn’t going to work.
Nailing The Marketing Bullseye
You must enter the appropriate “market level”
when you start a business if you want to succeed.
There are 5 levels of maturity that every
market eventually evolves to.
Even most good marketers don’t know this. By understanding
where your market stands and marketing at that level,
you’ll have 10X more chances of hitting a home run.
Here’s a real powerful analogy to imagine the 5
levels of a market. With each new level there’s
a new lock on the door. So, you need to upgrade
your “locksmith tools” to be able to get inside your prospect’s mind.
With each level, your prospect’s wall of
defenses gets higher and what worked before STOPS working.
I’ll quickly explain the first 4 levels and how to win at each stage…
Level 1 Marketing: Make a claim – any claim…
At this point, there’s almost NO ONE providing any
services or selling any information and if they are –
there’s very few making any “claims”. Imagine selling a dog-training
course… And no one has ever seen a powerful direct response ad in that market…
And your ad claims, “Teach your dog to behave perfectly.”
That’s all you would need to say in a “Level 1” market.
Unfortunately, very few of those exist on the internet.
Back in the day when I ran a painting company — it was what
I call a “level 1 service”. I would knock on the doors in
the middle of February (-30 outside) and ask “Would you like a free painting estimate?”
The key to that business was sales skills. My closing ratio my 2nd year was over 50%.
As more and more competition creeps in – the market changes. This leads to…
Level 2 Marketing: Expanding the claim…
At this stage all you need to do is “expand” the claim from level 1 to level 2…
For example, “Teach your dog to behave perfectly overnight.” The word “overnight”
has brought that claim to a new level of power because
you “expanded the claim”. It’s added more power to the claim.
So if I’m a smart marketer and I want to get into that self-defense
market I might come up with “beat bigger, tougher men without years of training”.
So, that’s an expansion of the claim.
The level 1 claim was “win street fights”, but now I’m saying “you can beat
bigger, tougher guys without years of training”.
As Vicent Vega says “That’s a bold statement.”
So, as more competition comes in and your prospects get
bombarded with lots of marketing messages — the claims get less and less believable.
The fact is about 90 percent of Internet marketers market at about Level 2.
They’re just trying to say something that sounds a little more “hypey”
than the next guy. And that’s a death sentence in most markets. They’re D.O.A.
Almost every copywriter in the world will tell you that
“hype isn’t as effective as it used to be”.
Unfortunately, your competition will follow suit and start
copying your new “expanded” promise sooner or later.
This forces the market to “mature” once again, which leads us to…
Level 3 Marketing: Mechanisms
So, let’s move on to Level 3 because really if you
here’s where you’re really going to start separating yourself from the crowd.
Every smart, successful marketer uses this concept in their marketing.
As a market matures, the prospects believe less and less
of what you have to say. So, you need to give them more PROOF.
A mechanism can add a lot of believability and power to your claims.
This my friends… is one of the most POWERFUL MARKETING TECHNIQUES YOU CAN EVER LEARN.
For example, “Teach your dog to behave perfectly
overnight thanks to the new European clicker method.”
“European clicker method” is the mechanism. It implies
there’s something powerful that’s making your claim possible.
So, let’s continue with the self-defense example.
I could say “New Russian fighting technology gives you the
power to be black belt almost overnight.” By introducing the
mechanism (Russian fighting technology), there’s a new level
of believability – because people think “there’s reason why”.
The mechanisms satisfies the left-brain (the logical part) of the mind.
So Level 3 is introducing the mechanism. Now, at some point
there’s going to be enough people that are smart and
are using mechanisms. So you need to go to the next Level, which is:
Level 4 Marketing: Expansion of the Mechanism
So sticking with the self-defense example we could say
“Radical Russian Nervous System Technology, Downloads
Ten Years Of Black Belt Training Into Your Body Almost Overnight.”
See the expansion here; it went from a new fighting system
technology to a “Radical Russian nervous system technology”.
See, that was an expansion of the mechanism.
So, automatically if somebody has been exposed to Level 3 stuff
or Level 2 and they see 4, they’ll be attracted. So, what happens next?
Everybody starts hyping the mechanisms. People start becoming “immune” to them.
So after that it goes to:
Level 5 Marketing: The 6 Keys To The Kingdom
Very few marketers on the planet know how to
market at this level. At this point there’s
6 locks on the front door and there’s no way you’re getting in that way.

Just got back from a great vacation in Canada. It was culinary debauchery. I ate french fries cooked in duck fat, soaked with gravy and cheese. It’s called “poutine” (from Quebec) and many more things.
I was hanging out with some of the smartest fitness internet marketers in the world. Vince Delmonte was there, Dave Ruel (the muscle cook) and many others.
We were there for a private mastermind session. I want to share my real opinion on masterminds. (good, bad and ugly).
I’ve been a part of DOZENS of masterminds since I started my journey into internet marketing.
In general, I think they’re great.
But I think most people get a FRACTION of what they could get from them. They have the wrong attitude, and it ends up costing them BIG TIME.
First things first: If you’re in a mastermind… be there to GIVE MORE VALUE THAN YOU RECEIVE.
I don’t care if you’re just a raw beginner who started yesterday.
You should always be giving with your time, pay for people’s dinners and lunches, share your expertise in your field (even if it’s unrelated to business), offer to help people, share your contacts, etc…
That’s the key that opens everyone up around you.
PAID vs. FREE MASTERMINDS
Obviously if you don’t have the funds, join some free masterminds if you can.
The problem is that they may not be as organized as a paid one.
BEST ADVICE: If you can’t find a free mastermind, START ONE.
I’ve started several masterminds over the years and they’re great.
You can start a “local entrepreneur” mastermind. Those are great, because you can hang out in person.
You can start a mastermind in your niche, and do it on Skype or Google Hangout.
Here are 3 that I like:
1. Problem-Challenge Solution
This is probably the most common.
Also known as “hot seats”.
People share their biggest challenge and people offer them their best advice. These are great when you’re at a paid mastermind, because you’re usually getting the advice of high level experts.
2. What’s Working The Best
This is probably my favorite format. This is where people share their BEST advice. They reveal what’s working lately…
It’s a great opportunity to learn new tactics that you can apply to your business and make more money.
3. Learning Masterminds
I actually just started one of these lately, and I’m really enjoying it.
I invited 3 close friends and said: “Do you want to get together for 1 hour a week, and we’ll share our favorite information from a book that I read lately?”
I wanted to get back to reading consistently, and this was my best idea. There’s built in accountability.
The benefit is that everyone is curating content on 2 levels: the book selection, and their favorite sections or most impactful concepts.
Everyone’s been loving it.
I’ve seen masterminds that do a combination of all the above — which is probably the best format.
Paid masterminds are usually well organized and have a solid structure.
There also seems to be a correlation between the quality of participants, and the costs of the masterminds.
In other words, a $25,000 mastermind usually attracts higher level people than a $5,000 mastermind.
When are masterminds a BAD experience?
I’ve been to masterminds where the “main expert” barely delivered any value or advice. Just asked a bunch of generic questions, and didn’t really provide any specific tips that ended up working. This becomes more common as you become an expert marketer. Make sure you go to masterminds where the “expert” is smarter and more experienced than you.
When do masterminds go UGLY?
It’s rare… but sometimes the participants just don’t care. I’ve been at private masterminds where 70% of the guys had their faces buried in their computer and weren’t even listening to the guy speaking.
Are you freaking kidding me? How disrespectful is that?
Make sure you listen when people are on stage. People notice if you’re listening or not.
THE BOTTOM LINE
I have some close friends that went from NOTHING to having solid 6-figure businesses PURELY because they joined the right mastermind early in their careers… built great relationships with everyone, and then have been making 99% of their income from joint venture partnerships with these people.
Again: the key to their success is… they are COOL guys who are fun to hang with, and provide value as human beings.
In other words, they become good friends before they start asking to do a JV.
Too many marketers jump the gun when they meet people, and want to do a “JV”. I was guilty of this myself when I first got started.
Then I stopped worrying about JVs and just started hanging out with people, having fun and delivering value. It seems JVs flow a lot more naturally in those environments.
So make sure you go in with great intentions. Deliver more than you can ever take… Be the coolest guy you can be… Share everything you’ve got… And eventually the Mastermind will give you 10X more than you ever gave.
Optin pages are one of the very best places to learn split-testing. Why?
Because you can get tons of results daily (even if you have only a little bit of traffic). You can really test tons and tons of ideas quickly and get some good experience.
Remember, an optin page is at the “top of the funnel” where potential prospects enter your world. So you should ALWAYS be testing new ideas on your optin pages, and aiming to improve conversion and performance.
What we’re going to do here is deconstruct all of the key elements of the optin page. And once you’re able to identify these various elements, it makes it a lot easier to decide what you need to split test (and the order of which elements to test 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc.)
Let’s keep this part simple.
When we are testing an optin page, here is the order of things to test:
1. The headline
2. The offer
3. The format
4. The first paragraph
7. The pre-head
And here’s the process I suggest you use: test 1 element at a time and test 3 variations (including the original or the “control”).
So for example, let’s say I want to start testing the headline – I would create 2 new headlines and test them against the original one. Once that test has produced a ‘winner’, I would test the offer. Then, you can test the format… after that the first paragraph, then the pictures… then video and then the pre-head…
1. The title of the webpage – this is the text that’s on top of the webpage itself. Ideas to test:
A) enter the keyword, such as: “you want some insider info on keyword?”
B) try several benefits, “want to teach your dog new fun tricks tonight?”
C) state the offer: “get 25 free videos below…”
2. The prehead – this is the headline before the main headline. Ideas to test:
A) enter the keyword, such as: “you want some insider info on keyword?”
B) highlight the small amount of time it’s going to take to get the reward “in just 30 seconds, you can own…”
C) ask a qualifying question, “do you love guitar soloing?”
3. The headline – this is the heart and soul of any head. This sells them on reading more. Ideas to test:
A) state the offer “who else wants 15 free dog training videos?”
B) very important: test different titles of the report (or offer). Example: test “47 hot traffic tips” vs. “47 insider traffic tricks” etc…
C) challenge them: “do you have what it takes to get ________?” (this worked surprisingly well in one of the markets we’re in.)
Advanced tip: run a multivariable test just on the headline. In other words, you will split- test every single word of the headline. This can give you astounding results. (But be aware this is part of the ‘Vertical Testing’ phase, after you have tested lots of different ideas in the ‘Horizontal Testing’ phase).
4. Sub-head – this is another headline that follows up the main headline or it’s a headline inside the ad that “breaks up” the copy. Ideas to test:
A) state secondary benefits “you’ll feel closer than ever with your pooch.”
B) tell them what to do next: “simply answer the 5 questions below to get your insider report…”
C) tell them to “simply enter your name and email below now…”
5. The lead-in – what’s the concept behind the headline and the entire ad? Ideas to test: (this varies greatly from market to market so I’ll use the dog market as an example)
A) dog breeding secrets
B) how to give your dog a massage
C) dog grooming
D) dog tricks
6. The offer – this is perhaps the most important part. What are you giving them in return for them giving you their name and email? Ideas to test:
A) free reports
B) free videos
C) free software
D) free consultation
7. First paragraph – the first paragraph can make or break your flow. Ideas to test:
A) the “qualify-and-welcome” strategy “if you’re looking for better, faster ways to train your dog, then this is the right place for you.”
B) hit a pain button and offer salvation “are you sick and tired of eating small vegetables and watching half of your crop die or rot? Then, you’ll be thrilled with the report i’m about to share with you.”
C) none at all – on optin pages: less is usually more.
8. The format – how the page is set up. This is very important.
A) the clean-white design
B) pleasing color combos
9. Location of optin box
A) right below the headline
B) to the right of the headline
C) on the bottom of the page
D) to the left of the headline
E) on the top and on the bottom
F) next to video
G) below video
10. The fly-in pop up – this is a technology that allows a pop-up to kind of “slide in” after the visitor lands on your website.
A) comes on instantly
B) comes on after 5 seconds
C) comes on after 10 seconds
D) comes on after 20 seconds
E) none at all – on optin pages: less is usually more.
F) has video inside
G) makes a different offer (if your offer is videos on the main page – try offering a report).
11. The exit pop up – this is a pop-up that appears if they click “back” or try to close the browser. You offer them another chance to opt in.
A) none at all
B) has video inside
C) makes a different offer (if your offer is videos on the main page – try offering a report).
12. Salutation – this is the “dear xxxxx” part.
13. The signature – this is where you can put a graphic of your signature. Blue seems to work better in a lot of cases (but make sure you test this out for yourself). Also, you can test different “titles” such as “the only all-in-one online coach”.
14. Video – a video that tells them to opt-in…
15. Audio – an audio that tells them to opt-in…
16. Background color – the color of the background.
17. Pictures – pictures of you or your offer
18. P.S. – this can make a big difference as well.
19. Fonts – the type of font can actually make a big difference
20. Bolding, highlighting, italicizing – I don’t suggest you go crazy here, but these can make a difference sometimes.
TIP: We’ve done quite a few optin form tests and almost always, the shorter it is – the more it converts. However, be aware that Google doesn’t like short optin forms so much… especially if you don’t have links going to some content. Just remember Google likes sites with content and they like it if you have a blog and articles on the site too.
Now – it’s time to put this advice into action. Forget about the “theory” of testing and start testing. If you have never done testing before, I promise you’ll really enjoy it once you get started.
